What is touchscreen technology?

Touchscreen is an electronic visual display, which a user can control by his fingers, touching on the screen. A touchscreen gives the opportunity to user to interact more directly with the system, compared with any mouse.
Touchscreens have become so common now that in tablet computers, smart phones and other mobile devices. The manufactures are using touchscreen in more devices instead of regular screen.
Where we used keyboards and mouse in computer systems at the end of traditional input devices, for the past few years we have been using these touchscreen technologies.
Touchscreens are used in many different devices such as laptop monitors, computers, tablets & smartphones, cash registers and KiOS. In some touchscreens, instead of touch-sensitive input, the grid of infrared beams is also used to feel the presence of fingers.

A resistive touchscreen works in some way. This is the electrically conductive layer present at the bottom of the screen. When you press these displays, you'll feel that the display could be a bit bend. Touch brings changes in the lower-power electric current, to indicate where it touched. Types of Touchscreens

There are many different types of Touchscreen available. Some of them are below: -

1. Resistive Touchscreen: -

Resistive touchscreens are the most popular technology at present. It is similar to a "transparent keyboards" which is overlayed at the top of the screen. A thin metallic electrically conductive coating is on the resistive touch screen panel. There is also a resistive layer which creates changes in the electric current when there is a touch event. When someone with a finger is above the screen, the stir arises from that, the effect of current also changes, and it is sent to the controller only for processing.
In this resistive touchscreen, a flexible upper layer made of polyester plastic is bonded with a rigid lower layer which is a conducting glass and is separated from an insulating membrane. When you press the screen, you force the polyester to touch the glass and so that it completes - like when you press a keyboard key. The Stealth Chip within the screen detects your coordinates where you have touched that screen.
These Resistive touch screen panels are more affordable than others but they provide only clarity of 75% and this layer can be easily damaged by any sharp object. Resistive touch screen panels also do not impair other external elements such as dust or water.

2. Capacitive Touchscreen

A capacitive touchscreen panel is coated with material that stores electrical charges. Whenever the panel is touched, then the charge of a small amount of that point of contact is drawn and drawn. Circuits, which are located in the corner of the panel measure that charge and send all the information to the controller to process. These capacitive touch screen panels work only by touching fingers and do not work with plastic or any other object. With this capacitive touch screen the other outside elements cannot flow much. They are very high clarity.
These screens are made up of many layers of glass. Its inner layer power conduct and the same way as the outer layer also. Therefore, this screen behaves like this, as if two electrical conductors are different due to the insulator. Hence it is also called a capacitor. As we keep our fingers above the screen, you also change its electric field. We can touch these capacitive screens in more than one place and it also works well.

3. Surface wave Touchscreen: -

Surface wave technology uses ultrasonic waves which passes over the top of the touch screen panel. When you touch the panel, it absorbs the wave of a small part. With the same change in ultrasonic waves, it detects that touched area and sends information to the controller to process. Surface wave touchscreen panels are the most advanced types so far, but they are easily damaged by external elements.

4. Infrared Touchscreen: -

In an intruder alarm such as magic eye beams, the grid pattern of LEDs and light detector photocells are used in the infrared touchscreen. They are arranged in the opposite sides of the screen. These LEDs release infrared light from the front of the screen that it looks like an invisible spider's web. If you touch the screen in some place then you come in the way of those beams or put a stop. The Microchip within the screen calculates where you have interrupted those beams, and the information is sent to the controller to process. It is used with something else other than fingers.

5. Dispersive Signal Touchscreen: - 

in 2002, It was introduced by 3M company. In it sensors detect your mechanical energy when you touch them and the Complex algorithms interpret those data to find out where your location is, and then the data is sent to the controllers.

6. Acoustic Pulse Recognition Touchscreen: -

In 2006, Acoustic Pulse Recognition Touchscreen was released by Tyco International's Elo Division. In this, transducers are used which are located around the screen and which convert the vibration to electrical energy by algorithms. They estimate the same location, then the data is sent to the controllers.

7. Optical Imaging Touchscreen: - 

Image sensors (cameras), which are placed in the edge of the screen, can easily pick up infrared black lights which are present in the opposite side of the screen.

These touchscreens are very durable compared to other traditional screens. Nowadays, because of protective layers like gorilla glass, this screen does not become too durable. Apart from this, it is usually dust proof, so it is very easy to clean.
